Tango vs Howpaper: five free workflows, or as many as you like

Tango is a well-known tool for turning a task into a step-by-step guide with screenshots (about 400,000 users of its Chrome extension, 4.8 stars). Its free plan now allows 5 shared workflows per workspace; it used to be 25, then 15. PDF export, blurring while you capture and your own branding are in Pro, at $22 per user a month billed yearly or $26 monthly; automatic redaction of sensitive data is Enterprise only. Everything you record lives in Tango's cloud workspace, behind an account.

Howpaper does the recording part the same way and keeps the result on your side: unlimited guides stored in your browser, HTML and PDF export for free, passwords and card numbers hidden automatically, and the Pro features for €24 once. If you use Tango and like it, here is what changes if you switch, and what you would give up.

When Tango is the better choice

If your team shares guides as links inside a workspace, wants to see who completed them, documents desktop applications, or needs the AI to write the prose, Tango does all of that and Howpaper doesn’t. If five shared workflows are enough for you, Tango’s free plan costs nothing.

When Howpaper is the better choice

If you make more than five guides and what you need at the end is a file — a PDF to attach, an HTML page for the intranet, Markdown for a docs repo, a Word document for the compliance folder — Howpaper gives you that for free or for €24 once, with no per-user subscription. Passwords and card numbers are hidden before the screenshot is saved, which matters when the guide shows a real account; in Tango that is a paid feature.

Trying it takes two minutes

Install Howpaper, press Record, do the task as you normally would, press Stop. The editor opens with every click as a numbered step; rename, reorder, blur, then export. You can keep Tango installed.
